Botero Fernando, a living legendary painter from Colombia who is famous for his unique style called “Boterismo”. His artwork usually portrays general public or notable people in hefty, exaggerated size to symbolise a humorous theme or political condemnation. Apart from receiving several other awards in various public gatherings, he was bestowed with the prestigious “Contemporary Sculpture Award” during the year 2012.
Botero Fernando was born on 19th April during the year 1932, at Medellin, Colombia. His parents were David Botero and Flora Angula. His father was a salesman and mother functioned as a seamstress. Fernando lost his dad at his age of 4, following which he was taken care by his uncle. Fernando had his primary education and secondary education in Antioquia Ateneo and Jesuit School of Bolívar respectively. Through his Uncle’s help, Fernando had joined School for Matadors by 1944. By 1948, Fernando’s work was presented in a group exhibition and later he managed to arrange for a one man display at Galeria Leo Matiz, Bogota. Six years later, he moved to Florence where he further mastered on Renaissance style. Then he moved onto Paris and so far he had presented his paintings in around 50 art exhibitions across all over the world.
Botero’s artworks, sculptures mostly concentrate on individuals, landscapes and still-lives. Almost all of them are crafted in a proportionally embellished way. Abu Gharib, Woman with fruit, Maternity, Smoking clown, Smoking woman and Man on Horse were some of his notable painting works. Most of his paintings were sold for million dollars.
